SEO IN THE AGE OF AI SEARCH

June 18, 2026 · Priya Nair

Search behavior has shifted faster in the last two years than in the previous decade. AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity now summarize, cite, and often skip the click entirely — Gartner projects organic search traffic to websites could fall by half by 2028 as AI-powered answers take over. For most brands whose growth engine is still built entirely around ranking on page one, that's an uncomfortable number to sit with.

But the brands winning this transition aren't disappearing — they're being cited. The goal has shifted from ranking for a query to being the source an AI engine trusts enough to quote by name. That means optimizing for citation, not just clicks: structured data that tells machines exactly what your page is about, clear entity definitions that establish who you are and what you're an authority on, and content that answers the actual question in the first two sentences instead of burying it under 400 words of preamble.

Early data backs this up: the average AI-search visitor — someone who clicks through after an AI Overview or a ChatGPT citation — converts at several times the rate of a traditional organic visitor. They've already had their question partially answered and are choosing to go deeper, which is a much higher-intent click than someone scanning ten blue links. Lower click volume doesn't mean lower revenue if the clicks you keep are worth more.

This is often called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), but the mechanics are simpler than the acronyms suggest. AI engines build their answers from pages that are unambiguous about three things: what the page is about (entity clarity), who wrote it and why they're credible (E-E-A-T signals), and how confidently it answers the exact question being asked (answer density). Pages that hedge, bury the lede, or rely on inferred meaning instead of stated meaning get skipped in favor of a competitor's more direct answer.

Our current playbook starts with an audit of your top 50 pages for 'answer clarity' — does the page state its core answer in the opening two sentences, in language a model could lift directly into a citation? From there we rebuild internal linking around topic clusters instead of isolated keyword pages, since AI engines weight topical authority heavily, and add or correct structured data (FAQ, HowTo, Article schema) so machines have an explicit, unambiguous read on the page's content rather than having to infer it from prose.

The other shift is in measurement. Traditional share-of-voice — where you rank for a keyword — still matters, but it no longer tells the whole story. We now track share-of-citation: how often your brand gets named or linked inside AI Overviews, ChatGPT responses, and Perplexity answers for your target queries, tracked the same disciplined way you'd track keyword rankings. It's a newer, noisier signal, but it's the one that increasingly predicts where the next few years of organic growth actually come from.

None of this means traditional SEO is dead — technical performance, backlinks, and page experience still feed the same models that decide what gets cited. It means the bar for content has moved from 'ranks well' to 'answers well enough that a machine is comfortable repeating it.' Brands that make that shift now, while most competitors are still optimizing purely for old click-through metrics, get a multi-year head start on owning the answer instead of just the ranking.
